With the leaves blown away and taking the leaf peepers with them, the tourism industry is quickly shifting gears to woo skiers and snowmobilers in hopes the fall and winter seasons will make up for a summer hit hard by recession and April showers that stretched into July. International travel was up, especially from Canada, France and England, boosted by a favorable exchange rate, while in-state and regional tourism flourished as people stayed closer to home. According to the Travel Industry Association of America, 75 percent of travelers expect to book a packaged vacation to save money, and six out of 10 will comparison shop online for the best deals.
