Summary

Prices of all varieties of rice, including the popular basmati, have been on the rise since 2006, with a 55 per cent jump late last year. The cause has been attributed largely to the increase in export prices from countries such as India and Pakistan.

Tilda, Britain?s biggest basmati- rice selling brand, released the Tilda Basmati Report 2008 last month to address the growing fears about price increases. The report forecasts that the low prices of the past are unlikely to return.

Jonathan Calland, head of external affairs at Tilda, said: ?We trade only in the pure version of basmati. We have tried to keep prices low but ultimately they will have to be passed on.
