Technological revolutions have brought into sharp focus the matter of total costs of ownership - though "costs" has to be interpreted in more than just a financial sense. Costs based on the savings or greater efficiencies the new systems make compared with the old are fairly easily calculated. Costs, though, also involve consequential bottom-line effects on business like a more informed sales force, smarter customer service, prompter deliveries, more accurate invoicing and so on. Leading the acceleration that makes new system forecasting in the UK both so difficult and critical is, of course, Microsoft. It has been suggested that Microsoft's ever faster drive to get users to upgrade may be running out of steam - another way of saying companies are tending to lag behind, perhaps becoming more canny in asking just whether they really need the new version's improvements.

Roget has announced that he is to retire. After the cheers died down in the saloon bar of the Stopwatch and Clipboard and Roget had been bought the customary jugs of cask matured Timely Motions the announcement was intended to produce we politely asked why. "Was it something we said?"

We never did gel to the bottom of it because Roget being Roget had already launched into his verbal memoirs of the changes he had seen in his forty odd years career in management services though not always under that title. Which point brings me to my reason for mentioning the event.
