Summary

Technology is either stoking greater productivity, or it is a demon throwing water on the fires of British industry, depending on which survey you read. The first, from Clearswift, says that almost 40% of workers in the US, Germany and the UK e-mail their relatives and friends, or swap jokes and other ephemera via the company e-mail system during working hours. How do these people have the time to do this? The organisation obviously employs too many staff and needs to get rid of the "deadwood". Employees who do this are stealing time and, by definition, money, so you wouldn't want them anyway. On the up side, a study commissioned by Cisco Systems claims that the use of mobile data services led to an average productivity gain of 13.4% per worker in 2003.
