United Arab Emirates (UAE) Pres. Sheikh Zayed established the UAE Marriage Fund to curb the rise in marriage costs. Prospective grooms receive Dh70,000 from the fund in exchange for undergoing fertility and AIDS tests, and the promise that their prospective wife's dowries will not exceed Dh20,000. The problem began in the 1970s when the rise in oil prices increased the wealth of UAE nationals, resulting in the trend of extravagant weddings.
