The Next Wave of Innovators

High-tech companies are responsible for more than a third of NH's gross do mestic product, and they will play an even larger role in the future as the sector grows, companies take advantage of the reinstated research and development tax credit, and colleges and universities continue providing a place to test new technologies.

That thriving tech marketplace is due to longtime success stories like defense contractor BAE Systems and Dean Ka-men, the inventor of the Segway. Newer tech success stories include GT Solar, a Merrimack photovoltaic (solar) technology company that has been among NH's fastest growing private companies and is now in the process of going public, and EqualLogic, a Nashua company that specializes in storage area networks and has entered into an agreement to be purchased by Dell for $1.4 billion.

The future of the high-tech market is in the hands of the next wave of innovators. Like their predecessors, those innovators started with a good idea and a little money in a basement or garage. Some haven't made it out of the garage yet, but have had early successes in re-search and sales.
