Companies drawn to e-learning as a complement to face-to-face training, an attractive option for cutting the travel costs and time associated with out of office training, are increasingly interested in open source software such as learning management system Moodle. According to research house Gartner, 90% of the world's companies, both large and small, will be using open source software by 2012. Open source software such as Moodle can be managed completely by an end user organization or a business can use a third party, such as HowToMoodle, to provide training, hosting and customization. Another key benefit, particularly in the current economic climate, is business continuity. Moodle is software that enables the creation of courses, content, activities and communities online. It also supports tracking and assessment. It is often referred to as a course management system, virtual learning environment or learning management system and it allows users to produce Internet-based courses by creating a Moodle Web site for the purpose.
