Talking Trash

When tossing away bags of paper and empty cardboard boxes, businesses may as well open the safe and throw out money. With high tipping fees and the state projecting a decline in capacity within the next 20 years, experts say businesses can generate more cash by creating less trash.

Believe it or not, solid waste disposal is big business and costs NH's municipalities and businesses millions each year in tipping fees (fees paid to dispose of trash in a landfill). Those fees range upwards of $79 per ton in the state, which can add up quickly. In 2002 alone, NH, which has a population of 1.3 million people, generated more than 1.3 million tons of solid waste and disposed of more than 1.5 million tons, with more than half going into landfills.
