A study among students by Kayworth & Leider in 2001 found the most effective leaders demonstrate mentoring skills, understanding for others and empathy. This is echoed by management guru Charles Handy, who says the dispersion of co-workers makes it more difficult to control and oversee what they are doing so leaders need to manage more by trust than control. There are different stages of trust development in virtual teams. Virtual leaders will also have to manage conflict between team members. So the top tips for developing virtual teams are: 1. Develop awareness of similarities and difference in the team. 2. Watch out for misunderstanding. 3. Give appropriate skills and support.
