India's batsmen failed to counter Sri Lanka's double spin attack, with Mendis overshadowing Muttiah Muralitharan, who helped himself to 21 wickets to take his overall tally to 756 victims.

The 25-year-old will travel to a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratory in Switzerland next Monday (18) to get the results of his 'B' sample. Asif was named as the player who had tested positive for the banned performance-enhancing drug Nandrolone while playing for the Delhi Daredevils during this year's Indian Premier League (IPL).

India were looking to put in a big performance in the third Test after a resounding victory in the second game at Galle last week. They won the toss and decided to bat first, but failed to capitalise on a good start given by Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, who scored 72. India's old guard of Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman failed to get big scores as they were undone by the twin spin attack of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis. The tourists managed only 249, with Mendis taking five wickets while another new boy, pace bowler Dammika Prasad, helped himself to three wickets on debut.
