The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is faced with the difficult task of preserving its cultural and historical identity in a background of rapid economic growth. The prospects for its oil industry remains favorable. However, the continued trend in budget deficits, though still manageable, is beginning to cause concern. The growing dependence on domestic borrowing is feared to eat up much of available funds that would be otherwise used for private sector development. Political reforms fail to keep up with the rate of economic change.
