After a historical survey the author looks at the working of government, the nature of the military, town life, industry and commerce, agriculture and the countryside, daily life (especially rituals of death and the institution of slavery), the role of religion (this is particularly interesting) and finally a look at hoards dating from after the 'end of empire'.
