The publication of Arab newspapers and magazines in France ceased by the start of the 1990s. Their demise is attributed to economic factors since these were created as propaganda vehicles for various Arab regimes without any thought to profits or marketing. Former contributors to these publications also claim that there is no more market for Arab newspapers in France since most immigrants from North Africa do not know Arabic.

The rise and fall of France's Arab press.

CHRIS KUTSCHERA recalls the heyday of the Arab press in Paris and its inevitable demise.

There was a time when visitors to Paris could buy a wide variety of Arab newspapers published in France: Al Watan al Arabi. Al Youm al Sabia, Al Mustakbal, Al Fursan, Al Moharrer, Kul al Arab, Al Talia at Arabia and some lesser publications. In the 1980s Paris was regarded almost as the capital of the Arab press. But by the beginning of the 1990s, they had all vanished without trace, leaving resident and visiting Arabs alike shrug...
