Living Up to Information Technology's Promise; a Project Management Implementation and Performance Perception

Summary

With capital projects consistently running late and over budget, it's time to look at what information technology leaders and project managers could do to step up their implementation success and performances. Project managers make use of life cycle concept as an effective and efficient instrument in implementation and performance monitoring of project success. In all the four major phases of a project life cycle, there are computer based and information technology driven techniques and tools that ensures project management success when applied. Time has gone when an Architect (a building construction designer) spend useful weeks and months in an unventilated room drawing a building plan with manual instruments without achieving accuracy, effectiveness and efficiency in quality design. Today, the use of auto card in construction design(a computer based information technology tool) make a lot of difference in design delivery time, efficiency, effectiveness and reduces the health and environmental hazards inherent in long time close-door design. This study examined the need to look up to information technology in enhancing project success using the project life cycle concept. We also examined a Baseline created research study list on IT based project success with the help of Kent Crawford, CEO of PM Solutions, a project management consulting firm based in Havertown, PA, Bob Labberte, an analyst with Milford, Mass-based Enterprise Strategy Research, and Michael McCabe, a spokesperson for TCS.

Living Up to Information Technology's Promise; a Project Management Implementation and Performance Perception

1. Introduction

What is known today as jet age is made possible because some people, organizations and countries accepted living up to information technology's promise against what obtained in stone ages and analog days. The rapid economic growth and the aesthetic transformation of the build environment is made possible due to information technology strategies. The breakthrough in telecommunications reduced the world's geographical map to a single unit global village. The use of mobile cell phone not only enhanced project implementation success but became an antidote that is propelling the wheel of economic, industrial and commercial activities of nations. Contract tenders and contract bidding, job vacancies, applications and interviews, financial payments and transfers, satellite monitoring of distant projects and medical examination of medical patients etc are possible today because of the challenges of information technology promises. This research study is aimed at examining some project management tools and software's and the role of effective communication in achieving project implementation and performance success.

Before looking into project implementation software tools and packages, lets first understand what is a project and project success.

1.1 What is a Project and Project Management

According to Ntamere, (1995) a Project is a discrete package of investment or endeavour, policy measures and institutional and other activities designed to achieve a s...
