This paper hopes that getting older means getting wiser but it is not always the case. The Skills for Business Network work-based e-learning project has been conducting a study in the past three months to look at why employers are currently investing in e-learning and the difference it is making to their business and staff. Cost is a more significant benefit early on in the maturity life cycle but other financial benefits and business measures improve steadily with maturity. All established users of e-learning agreed that it saves money, delivers other financial gains and influences the measures that the business uses to assess its own performance. IT and company-specific skills are most likely to have an e-learning component in the mix. This paper can also see that the significant areas of growth in the next three years reflect a growing maturity in demonstrating responsibility and adapting to change.

Older and Wiser

We hope that getting older means getting wiser but it's not always the case. Just because we've added a few more years doesn't necessarily mean that we've learned from them. But there comes a time (with any luck) when the penny drops and we start to grow into maturity. Maturity might be characterised by an increased self awareness (of both strengths and weaknesses), the ability to use experience to adapt to a world that is constantly changing, the gift of seeing the bigger picture beyond a single agenda and a willingness to both take on responsibility and to contribute.
