Each participant from the recent Beyond e-learning Global Watch mission to the US was asked to choose an area of interest. The task seemed simple -- discover what works in the US and publish the findings. The increasing pace of change in US markets and technology, together with a new learner profile is affecting what is required of blended solutions. Learners want volumes of information, but not depth and can multi-task. Blended learning must not be about one-off events -- solutions must be weaved into learners' everyday working lives. This changes the emphasis from trainer-led delivery, focused on content, to an informal performance led approach, focused on the audience's needs. Community learning is still in its early days, but many organizations have started. Genentech is experimenting with dynamic FAQs, learning cafes and communities of practice. Learning miles and credits, tied into competency frameworks and linked closely to performance are possible solutions, but it is an issue the US is still struggling with.
