There have been many regional and international efforts to resolve the crisis, but those who tried were frustrated at a lack of progress, mainly because the Zimbabwe government has maintained a policy of not recognising the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) as a legitimate opponent, insisting that it would rather negotiate with the British government, which it accuses of being the main cause of the country's problems. After the beatings in March, which included leaders and members of both factions, the opposition has resolved to unite in its demands for the restoration of democracy and the rule of law.

Moment for Action

AFTER SEVEN YEARS OF TREATING IT as purely a domestic issue that could easily be dealt with internally, southern African leaders have woken-up to the reality that Zimbabwe is facing a major crisis that requires their attention.
