THE Danish cartoons that greatly offended the Muslim world earlier this year have probably sparked an even greater debate about how the Muslims interact with the contemporary world. Muslim reformers of the past century - such as Mohammed Abdu, Refaa Al-Tahtawi, Tana Hussein, Ali Abdel-Razik and others - sought and unfortunately failed to modernize Islam.
