Summary
The use of e-learning is growing steadily and there are many examples of organizations for which the use of new learning technologies is now commonplace. However, plenty are still struggling with getting their first e-learning projects off the ground, as they meet resistance from wary management, learners and L&D professionals. In the face of such reluctance -- perhaps even outright hostility -- to embrace the idea of self-paced e-learning, you could consider using live online learning as a bridge. Gradually introduce more self-directed online activities between the welcome session and the event (maybe some reading, videos, podcasts, Web research, perhaps a questionnaire, but nothing too heavy with complex interactions and assessments), and similarly between the event and the wrap-up.
