Monument to peace

French artist Armand Fernandez has created a 5,000-ton monument to symbolize peace in Lebanon after a 15-year civil war. The structure, which is located outside the Lebanese Ministry of Defense at Yarze, contains real Soviet T-55 tanks, artillery and armored vehicles embedded in concrete. The monument was unveiled in 1996 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Lebanese Army. Fernandez believes that art plays a key role in the attainment of peace and prosperity in any society.
