When considering performance improvement, business development, re-engineering and transformation options, boards need to achieve a balance between change and continuity, and focus upon areas of greatest opportunity. For many, change is an inevitable consequence of their roles and responsibilities. It may be both necessary and desirable, and the management of it has been a lucrative area for consultants. In some companies managers may be assessed and rewarded according to the amount of change they bring about. Few changes affect everyone in the same way, and the impacts of certain changes may not be immediately apparent. There might be hidden and longer term consequences. Over a half of the top ten critical success factors (CSFs) for winning business identified by the research program start with the word understanding. Understanding underlines other CSFs as well. In conclusion, successful companies are the most focused. They recognize that continuity can be important and only change what needs to be changed.
