Jordanians have now become more aware of the inevitability of King Hussein's passing. After leading the nation for more than 40 years, Hussein remains healthy but a recent operation for cancer underscored his mortality. Analysts have expressed concern regarding the monarch's precarious health at a time when Islamic fundamentalists are beginning to gain influence in Jordanian politics.

Jordan: intimations of mortality.

Despite rumours, King Hussein of Jordan does not appear to be terminally ill. But the simple fact that he has undergone an operation for cancer has brought the country face to face with the discomforting realisation that he cannot be expected to last for ever. Mariam Shahin writes from Amman that this is particularly unsettling at a time when the influence of the Islamic fundamentalists is on the rise.
