The bribery conviction in Mar 1999 of Aryeh Deri has served to foster the simmering division between the Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jewish communities of Israel. Deri, the leader of the Shas Party, is believed to be innocent by the Sephardi Israelis or those whose roots can be traced to neighboring Middle Eastern countries. They have accused Ashkenazi Israelis, those whose origins are from western nations, of having determined Deri's guilt before the trial even began.
