Intercountry adoption in Northern Ireland.

Introduction

Under the legislative arrangements governing intercountry adoption, Northern Ireland may act as a 'receiving country', ie receiving children who have been adopted from overseas; or it may act as a 'sending country', ie sending children from Northern Ireland to be adopted overseas. So far, no child has been sent under the current intercountry adoption legislation for adoption overseas. This article therefore describes the process in Northern Ireland as a receiving country.

The legislative framework and procedures are broadly similar to that of other parts of the UK. However, there are some important differences, especially in relation to the role of the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (the Department) and the matching and post-placement arrangements within Health and Social Services Trusts for children adopted from overseas.
