Summary
The silver fibre and its value added product play a significant role in the economy of Pakistan. Millions of growers are directly engaged with growing and producing of cotton. At the time of independence the output of cotton was million 1.1 bales and its per hectare yield was 160 kg. In the first industrial policy 1948 emphasized was given on the development of textile industry. Therefore, new technology was introduced in 1966 in agricultural sector to boost up the output of cotton. The current output of cotton is million 11.7 bales, which is ten times more of the output at the time of independence. The increasing output of cotton encouraged textile industry and currently 403 textile mills are functioning in the country. Pakistan has been earning about 60% foreign exchange from the raw cotton and its manufacturer goods.
