It is the great weakness of the modern environmental movement that it has not acquired any sort of mass following: whether it talks about climate change, sustainable development or renewable sources of energy, one is left with the sound of an argumentative, penetrating voice - environmentalists like Lord Melchett, George Monbiot or Jonathan Porrit - on Radio 4 exhorting us to leave the car at home and get on a bus instead.

Editor's Note: It is a frequently forgotten fact that all forms of social structures ultimately rest on the ownership and use of land. The next two articles look at the history and current attitudes towards land in Britain and the United States.
IT is one of the aspects of the slowly building row over the changing character of Great Britain that there is growing concern over what is happening to the physical framework of the island - the land, the buildings and the infrastructure. Like any island, Great Britain is finite; it is about 800 miles long, with an average width of something more than an hundred miles, and an area of about 90,000 square miles. Not all of this is equally fit for human settlement: about 30,000 square miles are taken up by the Highlands of Scotland, the Lake District, Snowdonia, Dartmoor and a few other areas of natural beauty and what passes for 'wilderness' in this anciently settled country. This is inhabited mainly by hoteliers, people in the tourist trade, retired folk and the very small numbers required by modern farming.
