That is an emotion to which [Gautam Lewis] is not given. Nor is he bitter. At three, his parents dumped him "because I had polio" outside "Mother House" in Kolkata, one of the homes for abandoned children run by Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity.

Having rejected India through childhood and adolescence, Gautam, now 31, has suddenly discovered going to Kolkata has given him a new confidence about who he really is. "I don't feel Bengali, I cannot speak Bengali but India has become very important to me. I am proud to be Indian."
