When the National Patriotic Party (NPP), led by John Kufuor, won Ghana's December 2000 elections, the result was not only a victory for democracy but for right of centre politics in the country.
Kufuor was widely expected to introduce a series of economic reforms, including reduced state subsidies and widespread privatisation.
