Contemplating change or total transformation?

With their first presidential election behind them, groundbreaking municipal elections underway, an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza pending, and the promise of legislative elections ahead, Palestinians are witnessing one of their more interesting periods in recent history. But while hopes are high the approaching era will be one of consolidated change, many are pinning their hopes on nothing less than total transformation.

THE PALESTINIANS OF THE WEST Bank and Gaza Strip have had a difficult century and it is unlikely anything that comes along over the next hundred years will seriously raze them. In this interesting year, various degrees of change can be identified, the most visible being the one at the top of the leadership.

For four tumultuous decades, Yasser Arafat guided a movement, then a nation, with a programme which, rooted in revolutionary politics evolved into near dictatorial control over a fledgling nation state. With his passing has come Mahmoud Abbas, (popularly known as Abu Mazen) aged 69, the veteran "gentleman" Fatah politician.
