The article first in a series of three that takes a look at the state of e-learning as recession impacts corporate learning and development is presented. Talk to colleagues and friends in the e-learning industry and you will discover no signs of the implosion experienced by the financial services sector over the last quarter of 2008. However, that is not to say that those busy working are demonstrating reckless optimism or are full of grandiose e-learning plans. Many are focussing on remaining within budget and placing more emphasis than ever on cost control. Another important factor is that, in a recession, employees and students will be expecting more e-learning and less classroom training. They are realistic and know that e-learning is likely to cost less than classroom training and so are ready to adapt to it. It does seem inevitable that recession will provide the stimulus to propose large reductions in classroom training in favor of e-learning.
