Summary

A combination of factors, really. First of all, we spent ages working the first album Hanging Around after its release. After doing the UK and Europe we ended up in India, which was not planned. It was massively unexpected but hugely exciting. After the trip we were bubbling with ideas. But most of us had day jobs, so we had to work the recording in between other basic life stuff. Nothing sinister, no writer?s block or great mishaps and fallouts we just wanted to do it justice. Also, things like Bluffmaster and the rollercoaster that took us on probably accounted for some delays. In addition, we were cementing new relationships with labels here, around Europe and in India.

They are better. It?s still the Trickbaby sound, but its light years away from Hanging Around. It?s more confident and accomplished in its sound. Quite a few of the songs were written during and following an amazing India trip, so the inspiration from the homeland is more palpable. In a way, you can feel the rain, the traffic, the crickets and the mosquitoes at night. It?s more desi, more spacey, a bit disco and a bit retro. Hopefully it?ll make you dance, cry, smile... all the usual stuff.

Eugene Hutz, Yuri Lemeshev and Sergey Ryabtzev from Gogol Bordello played on the title track gene may be a New Yorker now, but he is a true 100 per cent Roma gypsy from the Ukraine and those guys originally came from Rajasthan. (Laughs) Don?t they say if you look back far enough, we?re all Indian? Eugene and Sergey have played with Madonna at Live Earth. Sergey was stage manager of the Moscow State Theatre for 10 years and Yuri is an amazing accordion player. We met Marcella Detroit after [Steve Ager] (Ager) saw her play a low-key blues gig in London. She played a moody, bluesy dirty harmonica on it really gives it a tequila kick. Apart from the members of the Trickbaby family, there was Silent Sankadecha on his tabla, dhol, dholak, bongos and anything that gives off a good whoop. Kunja, who we lost in the wilderness for a while, was back to beef up the beats and Jeevan was the temple temptress on harmonium and bells. And Toni, our latest recruit, was on keys and other bits.
