Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Mauritania are set to reap huge benefits over the next four decades if a visionary plan to produce solar energy in the Sahara takes off. The plan, which involves investments of more than $570bn, aims to provide Europe with 15% of its total energy needs by 2050. It will also fuel new, environmentally-friendly plants in North Africa to desalinate seawater and produce electricity for the region's rapidly rising populations and growing industrial and agricultural needs, as well as creating thousands of new jobs
