Despite frequent official statements that Islam as a religion is not responsible for violence, and Muslim attempts to counter the image of violence associated with their religion, the fear is that unless the democratic system in western Europe continues fervently to defend civil liberties and the rights of minorities, then the battle lines may become more pronounced.

Battle of Ideas

THE BROAD MUSLIM community is involved in a debate between four general camps. It is partly theological - about the application of Islam in the context of modern life, partly cultural adapting Islam to the cultural norms of a particular society and partly political about galvanising political action, both extreme and moderate.
