Summary
I had prided the way I did poetry with an obvious link with rap. And in general it's obvious to see the cultural link between hip hopinspired poetry poets and hip hop artists.
This column alone has unearthed numerous characters who have been instrumental in giving us the platform and access to deliver our words. It is because of this I refer to myself as a hip hop-inspired poet as opposed to a hip-hop poet, because I understand the value of hip hop to me, but I also understand the bigger picture.They founded a scene that years later I would benefit from. Though, as important as these are, it was through my direct relationship with rap that I found my voice. It's with this back drop that the Bass festival returns this June with MCs for life. It is the largest gathering of artists from Europe, UK, Africa and the US. From welknown poets like Ursula Rucker, rappers like Black Thought, hip hop-inspired poets like Charlie Dark, South African lyricists like Tumi.
