The need for information on how the attachment difficulties of adopted and looked after children affect their schooling.

The following comments on a leaflet by PACS (Post Adoption Central Support) on attachment issues in school reflect the strong concerns of adoptive families and professionals about meeting the educational needs of adopted children and the important role that teachers can and do have in helping them make sense of what is happening in children's lives:

I am the adoptive mother of a boy who has just started secondary school and in the context of his problems I was advised to look at your leaflet, Adoption, Attachment Issues and Your School, as being the best on the subject. I have found it immensely useful and it has really helped my understanding, never mind the teachers! I am recommending it to all sorts of people, including the post-adoption social worker. PACS is a small charitable organisation in central Scotland which receives a grant from Clackmannan, Falkirk and Stirling Councils. It offers a range of post-placement support and services to adoptive families and permanent foster carers (postadoptioncentralsupport.org). In order to assist with educational issues, PACS has produced a leaflet and booklet for teachers, families and social workers based on an attachment framework as an aid to understanding how the social and emotional experiences of pupils affect their behaviour and learning in school.
