Year 2004
From the Deputy Chairman David Blanchflower
Early in 2004 the Institute's Council of Management devised an action plan that would restructure the Institute and so ensure its future long-term viability. Central to the plan was that the Institute should adopt a modern approach to its mode of operation but at the same time retain the old values of service to the membership. The Institute exists to serve the needs of the membership by delivering a quality cost effective service and this is exactly what the action plan was designed to do. A...
'Lack of Skilled Workers Holding Us Back' Say Employers
The jobs market is at a standstill, according to John Philpott, Chief Economist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, commenting on the latest UK labour market statistics published by The Office for National Statistics. Despite continued good news on measured unemployment, hardly any net new jobs have been created this year and the employment rate for people of working age has fallen to 74.7%. The slowdown is even more marked in terms of hours worked - a further fall of 4.2...

Costs, though, also involve consequential bottom-line effects on business like a more informed sales force, smarter customer service, prompter deliveries, more accurate invoicing and so on. Leading the ...
Information Governance: An Ethical Perspective

With the growing use of technology the challenge to maintain and deliver information in an ethical and efficient manner raises a number of core questions for the UK. Although the tools and technology for creating, processing, distributing and storing information are constantly being improved, they are still far from...
Protecting Against Discrimination
There is new protection from discrimination in the UK with the implementation of two European Employment Directives. These two new regulations concern unfair discrimination in employment, The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003 and the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations which came into force on December 2, 2003 aim to ban discrimination in employment and vocational training on grounds of sexual orientation and religion or belief. The regulations apply t...
Half a Century Through the Eyes of the Journal
The history of the official journal of the Institute of Management Services, Management Services, is discussed. The formation of the Work Study Society from the amalgamation of the several other bodies seems to be the definitive point. Life could not have been simpler then; Work Study, that great British innovation, laid claim to all factors affecting productivity improvement. It was in 1967 that "Management Services" was added to the title of the journal, which finally became just "Managemen...
